Hmm, Tona must be having difficulty with the values gap between the jingoism-heavy version of patriotism she's used to and the conscientious-objector, humanist version she's trying to exercise by not joining Trump's brute squad.

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for the combover to drop. Tona's said no, and Trump is letting this stand?

...or maybe she just despises Trump. And yeah, the chapter's not over.
anonymous coward 19th Feb 2017, 6:54 AM edit delete reply
That's a horrifying notion to follow:
"Well, if it were another President I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'd totally join up, kick down doors, blow shit up, kidnap and execute people in the middle of the night, and visit hell on Earth on just the President's say so. I don't care about due process, it doesn't matter that stuff is unconstitutional or human rights violating. But I won't do it for Trump."

She did swear The United States Armed Forces Oath of Enlistment and/or The United States Uniformed Services Oath of Office, yes?

Going to go out on a limb and guess that you've never been a member of any military organization.

However nice to see that you grasp the power of what is being unleashed here--when "going after the bad guys" isn't restricted to somewhere far away and sandy.

More like I know that any state level, or population targeted action going after anyone else with intent to hurt, threaten and/or kill is by definition terrorism, as in using violence and the threat of violence to achieve political aims. It doesn't matter where in the world it's aimed and happening.

I appreciate that fear, realpolitik, confusing propaganda, conflict over scarce necessities, and the conflicting ambitions of various elites often makes 'thou shalt not kill' into a subjective, slippery-slope question of degree and intent in the real world. That said, I think Smedley D. Butler summed it up best when he declared: War is a racket.

Easy to tell people that quote from General Butler.

Far harder to show what he meant, especially without direct common experience in the matter.

Hence the current production.

If you can manage that well enough so the chickenhawk Trump supporter types both understand and accept it, that would be heroic.
Chippewa Ghost 22nd Feb 2017, 8:02 AM edit delete reply
Chippewa Ghost
Ah, I wouldn't assume that there aren't Trump supporters who won't put their money where their mouth is when it comes to the application of violent action, both the regimented institutional kind and the alternative... cue our incipient tragedy.
anonymous coward 23rd Feb 2017, 4:39 AM edit delete reply
Of course there are lots of wannabe jackbooted thugs, supporting Trump, that may actually do it given the chance. That said, the CIA has been known to predict revolutions demographically by population bulges of large numbers of unmarried, angry, *young* men. Population bulges and high youth unemployment, according to them that's what brought down Muammar Gaddafi and many others. I think they've probably got a point, consider the sorts of violent and/or danger-seeking stunts that bored young men do all by themselves without any orders, uniforms, or military equipment involved.
In contrast, news and commentary articles claim that Trump supporters skew older than average in America. I'm optimistic this means most of his faithful just can't be bothered to stop watching TV and get off the couch to join the new brownshirts, or their arthritis is acting up too much and they can't do it.

If your point is that many of his supporters are veterans who did serve in the past, you're probably right about that. If you're suggesting that rabid Trump supporters have already caused incidents and are just waiting for direction and support to cause more incidents, you're right about that too. Let's hope instead that most of what we have to fear of this presidency is its incompetence, corruption and divisive rhetoric, because that's bad enough already.

I'll grant you that we're all but certain to see more domestic terrorism before it's over, though, even if the real Trump doesn't get anywhere with raising brownshirts.

Y'know, the "Best Mom" award gets thrown around a lot, but I think here's someone who can hold on to it for a pretty long time

Maureen sure has a gross way of showing it but she really does care about her daughter's happiness.

In other words, Mama Zehm enjoys promiscuity and assumes that everyone else does whether they admit it or not.

Gods bless Maureen...

I love the resistance Tona is putting up here. Considering that, say, a decade ago she might have jumped at a chance to serve her president (who, though contemptible, is nowhere NEAR the clowntown shitshow we have now) in any way he might have asked.

Of course, given the promos and banners and such, we know she evetually steps up...

...I think. LIR comics have surprised me before.

Tona's argumentation is overall well and sound, but she run right into a trap here with the "there's things you won't do for Sam" bit! :-D

Also: Nice foreshortening on the ax!

LOL @ Tona's mom...

I have an older relative, which shall remain unnamed, that is similar. Not in the promiscuity sense, as far as I know, but in carelessly blabbing about sensitive subjects (she's also blonde).

My poor wife gets the brunt of it, and she just lets her talk, because if you try to talk her into being discrete, she just makes a scene.

Sam's got ways of cutting down on Maureen's blabbing

Yeah, the comments section here is also flagged V! S! and L!

The cold makes Tona hard.

And tougher than a diamond she'll need to be, as she gets hit by bombs, bullets, and one super pissed off Autumn Bay techno-anarchist.

At least she's not narrow minded, it seems...
anonymous coward 19th Feb 2017, 7:07 AM edit delete reply
I dunno about that, Maureen is advocating that Tona join a political, armed, reprisal and intimidation squad here. That not a tolerant and broadminded proposal.

@Kapit: after years of "that boy seems nice" Maureen is ready to accept an easy, external explanation of why her attempts at matchmaking failed. (whoops this is covered more on the next page)

@Coward: Just like parents everywhere, Maureen has a kind heart and poor vision. She does not and never will understand how cruel and vicious her daughter can be, and the follow-on implications towards her parenting.

Problem: Tona is stealing the spotlight

Solution: Make someone even more "Tona" than Tona.

If the world was a just place, Maureen would have her own series.
