How will you react if American elections are suspended or "delayed" this November? (Emphasis on the Americans in the audience, but hey Canadians you ready for some seriously scary extradition requests?)

Tona actually does have the upper hand... a close read of this chapter will reveal a very obvious next update.

I don’t know... I mean it would have to come to mass protests, if the checks and balances didn’t do their job...

Also, her weapon looks like she grabbed it by the barrel and cracked a few skulls with it!

No such luck, Tona's weapon took a bit of a tumble... rest assured if she's beating people that'll be front and center!

If President Trump actually tried to delay or cancel the elections, that would be a bright-line offense, clearly a violation of his duties to uphold the Constitution. He would be instantly impeached; all the Democrats would vote for it, and also all the conservative Republicans (who are fans of the Constitution), and also all the country-club Republicans (who never wanted Trump), meaning it would pass in a landslide. Since military and Federal officials are sworn to uphold the Constitution, I'd expect them to refuse to cooperate with these unConstitutional orders, and enforce the impeachment. If some kind of cabal managed to gain the reigns of power and impose a military coup, that would launch Civil War II.

However, I consider all of this to be about equally as likely as President Trump having his own secret death squads that nobody knows about. Since nobody knows about them, they are probably staffed by Reptilians.

Personally I think it is more likely that we get Civil War II from the actions of the self-styled Resistance against President Trump. For example, the state of California has recently enacted laws that are in explicit defiance of Federal immigration policy. I believe the Constitution and legal precedents are pretty unambiguous that the Federal government gets to control immigration and states can't opt out. (Heck, the Obama administration wouldn't even allow any states to enforce the Federal laws.)

It's a bedrock tradition in this country that we have elections, and the losers hand over the reigns of power to the winners. I'm opposed to anything that threatens that, and in my humble opinion a lot of the "Resistance" stuff is playing with fire.

P.S. California, and my state of Washington, passed laws legalizing marijuana, which is in defiance of Federal anti-drug policy, but I'm not worried about that one as the Federal government has no Constitutional authority to ban marijuana. It's a travesty that the Supreme Court has allowed the incredible "inter-state commerce" loophole that theoretically grants the sweeping anti-drug powers the Federal government has invented for itself.

-The military will do exactly what it's told to do by its chain of command.

-American secret death squads tend to be an overseas kinda thing, also we like to subcontract a lot... glad you're enjoying the show.

-I would agree that California is out of line with respect to having an independent immigration policy.

Your faith in the Constitution and those charged to enforce it is commendable. Thanks for reading.

The military will do exactly what it's told to do by its chain of command.

Some will. Some won't. Civil War II.

Kurt Schlicter actually wrote about this recently, in his usual gonzo style (which isn't for everyone, but which I usually enjoy.) He's a retired Army colonel, so his opinions carry quite a bit more weight than my own. (Feel free to sneer at my lack of qualifications on anything military; it's a fair cop.) Also he wrote two novels about a future where America split into two countries... whatever your opinions on the merits of his novels, at least he's been thinking about this stuff for a while.

Why Democrats Would Lose the Second Civil War Too

American secret death squads tend to be an overseas kinda thing

Fair point. I meant secret hit squads operating domestically, taking out President Trump's enemies or "leaning on" people he wants to influence. I don't think there's a snowball's chance of something like that happening and staying secret, but I'll readily concede that overseas squads could be kept secret.

Your faith in the Constitution and those charged to enforce it is commendable.

I think the Constitution is the greatest plan for running a government ever made, and a lot better than what we have now.

Thanks for making the comic.

Oh, that's the individual who wrote that article?

Apologies for being peeved, but to me Mr. Schlicter's article betrays the same lack of imagination that assumed the current confrontation between the United States and Russia would be something expressed in terms of tanks and Tomahawks.

Case in point, the article's non-discussion of the results of the utter crippling of the United States' economic capability, more so in the blue state insurgency model but certainly in both. There is no "winner" of an armed insurrection in the United States, none whatsoever.

Kurt Schlicter would agree with you that a civil war would truly suck. He's warning against it, not saying "oh this is gonna be great and my side is going to win."

He has seen first-hand the aftermath of a civil war and he is not a fan. "I know the endgame of discarding the rule of law for short-term advantage because I stood in its ruins."

If the president suspended elections I'd expect every american to complain about it on twitter and facebook or bitch that it's against the constitution. California would threaten to secede, but I can't see the Donald giving up his power without someone prying him out of it.

Pretty sure the Constitution provides for suspending the right to vote in the case of "rebellion" or criminal behavior. Now, what "rebellion" means is open to debate.

I realize that someone like Captain Happy can't simply be looked up in the phone book - but come on Tona, there has to be a better way to contact him than wrecking his city!

While Eric = Captain Happy would be some pretty cool Fight Club style plot twisting, I can tell you with certainty that Happy doesn't have the weakness for booze and loose women that Eric does.

That's probably not commentary on their respective creators.

edit: Haven't I shown you the impossibility of the following equations?

Eric + anyone (for very long)
Tona + anyone (who's not crazy)

Eric + Tona already happened and their child is probably the Antichrist... check back in a couple volumes.

"How will you react if American elections are suspended or "delayed" this November?"

You'd say: "hey, look! USA is only 10% as corrupt as my country!" XD
Man, I can tell you. Brazil is the most corrupt country in the world, no sarcasm. That's why we pay more taxes than any country (and the collected money isn't converted to the population benefits. We're in 80th position in social development not for nothing). The only country that can be compared to the same corruption level is Italy. No kidding.

Ouch... hope in a few years I'm not asking you for tips on how to navigate that level of corrupt BS...
AmeliaP 9th Apr 2018, 9:07 AM edit delete reply
I try to ignore the corruption and be the best citizen I can be. That's the way I face it and try to fight the corruption. Yep, people criticize (and make fun of) me for obeying the law so much. But if we, the citizens, don't be like that, how can we argue with corruption? It's hard to admit, but the government reflects its nation (unfortunately, the majority makes the nation o__o)
