All the heavy shit is coming out, starting now...

5.56 NATO ain't heavy shit

Is that a M4A1 carbine?

Wouldn't a MP5 or MP5K be better for the territory and mission profile? The opposing team doesn't seem to be heavily invested in body armour here, so the 5.56mm bullet's ability to penetrate such armour seems... wasted here. (Unless Tona's really carrying that in case of a frag attempt, or some other threat profile....)

You can't assume that the "enemy" doesn't wear Kevlar, so you carry a heavier weapon. Remember, guns get Tona wet...

I think you could be overestimating personal armour: It doesn't protect against successive hits in the same place so much. That means at shorter ranges against an enemy armed with an automatic you may not even benefit from having it.

In contrast, using the M4 against soft targets in close range has a problem called over-penetration. In that case the bullet goes in and back out again carrying most of its energy away from the target. If you don't get lucky and hit something vital or crippling with your through wounds that can be surprisingly ineffective: It might only make the target bleed a bit and need to get some stitches after they kill you.

But fine, maybe the MP5 goes a little too far towards shorter ranges and greater effectiveness on unarmoured targets. Would you call it for a P90 instead, or do you have something else in mind?
sigpig 8th Mar 2018, 2:08 PM edit delete reply
'n in the Canadian Army, so I'm fairly aware of body armour. The P90 is an awesome weapon, but when fighting a mob, I don't think Tona cares about collateral damage.

A 5.56 NATO round could also bounce off the armour covering the victim's back, and tumble through the body. We're not talking about 7.62 rounds here, the AR-15 series of rifles were made specifically for close-range warfare. Give me a SCAR-H or FN-FAL any time...

@AC: but but but tumbling rounds

But but seriously it depends on what sort of ammunition Tona's using.

@Sigpig: Your preferences in firearms are noted yet again.

The M4 is Tona's weapon of choice, so regardless of her justification (built-up terrain and the potential for an out-of-doors encounter at moderate range) she was going to carry one anyway.

Totally not a rip from the logo for the Wounded Warrior program!

On the first glance, Tona seems to have the advantage, obviously because she is the one with the gun, while her opponents only have "blunt object" type melee weapons.
On the other hand though, she is just one person (as long as no backup arrives) versus a larger group, who could attack from different sides at once. The size of her gun may actually even be disadvantageous there.
On top of that, while the value of Ellen Greco's BMI is quite probably within the range of what is considered healthy for a person of her size (in other words, she isn't overweight), Tona will nevertheless soon feel like she is carrying a sack of bricks...

Tona's other advantages (i.e. she has her own "larger group" backing her up) are about to get dealt with... see next page.

Tona’s got that “don’t know when to quit” kinda strength... I promise there will be some hand-to-hand combat coming real soon.
