Well, I'll put my opinions out here in public about using sketchup environments:

-If you want them to closely match your characters' appearance/style you MUST trace & redraw them. I did this for much of Winners and Losers.

-If speed is a requirement, use Gaussian blur, colored filters, gradients, particle effects, etc. to take the harshness off the environment. This is what I do for pin up backgrounds.

-If "authenticity" is a requirement then go draw bowls of fruit or some other navel gazing shit. This is friggin' comics, not fine art.
